Corticosteroids are medications that mimic the effects of the hormone cortisol, produced naturally by the adrenal glands. Cortisol affects the immune system by lowering levels of prostaglandins and reducing the interaction between certain white blood cells(T-cells and B-cells) involved in the immune response. Corticosteroids stimulate this effect to lessen the inflammatory response, thus reducing pain and allowing someone to better benefit from physical therapy.

Precautions
Potential local side effects of corticosteroid injections include infection, subcutaneous atrophy, skin depigmentation, and tendon rupture. [5] These complications often result from poor technique, too large a dose, too frequent a dose, or a failure to mix and dissolve the medications properly.
